Where do the girls go/meet on 5K day?

GOTR participants will gather together with their teams and coaches on race day on Diamond View Park in front of DPAC. Is your girl in 5th grade? If so, here's a special 5k opportunity!

If Girl on the Run is a fifth-grader, we’re hosting a table just for her at the 5k. We'd like to make sure your girl knows she can continue her journey in middle school with our new Heart & Sole program, with a curriculum tailored just for 6-8th graders. If you plan to be at the 5k, please send her over to the GOTR information tent to fill out a postcard with information about how she's feeling about the 5k, and her thoughts about her season with GOTR. The first 200 girls to complete it will receive a free Heart & Sole backpack. We'll mail the postcard back to her in the summer as a reminder to register for Heart & Sole in the fall.

Heart & Sole considers the whole girl - body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive, structured space where girls can learn.  It helps girls develop the skills to tune into their own truths and to unleash their power to live confidently and joyfully, and builds life skills like team building, developing a support system, boundary setting, decision making, asking for and providing help, and more.

What and who are Running Buddies?

Running buddies are adults (18 years or older) who are paired with every girl to help and encourage them while completing the 5K. Running buddies may be a member of a girl’s family or a family friend. Every girl must have a Running Buddy who has registered and paid for the event! If you, as parent or family member, can't serve as your daughter’s Running Buddy, please tell your daughter’s coach by the beginning of April 2017. The coach will notify our office and we'll provide a volunteer Running Buddy for her. Running Buddies (parents included) must pick up their bib and t-shirt at packet pick-up at Raleigh Fleet Feet on April 26 from 4:30-7 p.m.; Carrboro Fleet Feet on April 27 from 4:30-7 p.m, Durham Fleet Feet on April 28 from 4-7 p.m.

Are the girls automatically registered for the 5K?

Yes! The girls are registered as part of their program registration. Parents should not re-register their daughters. All girls will receive their 5K materials (bibs, pins, goody bags) the morning of the event. For all other 5K participants (Running Buddies, coaches, family members and community participants) packet pick-up information is as follows: Raleigh Fleet Feet on April 26, from 4:30-7 p.m.; Carrboro Fleet Feet on April 27, from 4:30-7 p.m.; and Durham Fleet Feet on April 28, from 4-7 p.m.

What should girls wear to the 5K?

Girls should wear their program t-shirts and running shoes, and any other fun accessories they wish. This is a rain or shine event. Feel free to share your GOTR spirit! Coaches may provide special tutus, headbands, colorful socks, etc. for the girls on your team. Running Buddies are encouraged to come in tutus, festive attire, etc.

What else do I need to know?

Make sure your daughter has eaten a healthy breakfast and gone to the bathroom before you arrive. There will be port-a-johns on site, but there is always a line for the bathroom!

The purpose of this event is to celebrate each girl’s individual accomplishments. Every girl crosses the finish line with a smile on her face and the pride of knowing she has just done something amazing. Thank you for allowing us the privilege to witness and be a part of that magic. Contact Ronnie Bower, ronnie@gotrtriangle.org, or 919.401.6307 with any questions!
