We're Offering a Summer Session!

Posted 4/29/2016
Looking for a summer program to help prepare your rising 6th grader for middle school?
Girls on the Run of the Triangle will offer a summer Heart & Sole program at Solite Park in Durham!
Heart & Sole creates a positive, structured space for middle school girls to learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy, strengthen connections and develop skills that will help them as they move through adolescence and beyond. Heart & Sole is accessible to all girls regardless of athletic ability or fitness level and considers the range of ages and varied experiences of middle schools.
The Heart & Sole program will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:45pm – 8:15pm. The 10-week program will run from June 6th to August 9th. The girls will run in the Bella Rose Strides for Babies 5K on August 6th.
Girls on the Run/Heart & Sole is committed to serving all girls who wish to participate in our programs. Financial assistance will be provided using a sliding scale.
To make the Heart & Sole experience even more meaningful, consider training to run with your girl in the end-of-season 5K event. Fleet Feet Carrboro and Durham have teamed up with Girls on the Run of the Triangle to offer a $50 total discount on the Heart & Sole program and No Boundaries Beginner 5K training program if you register for both programs.  Contact Sharon or Hannah at 919.401.6307 for details and how to take advantage of this promotion.

New Registration and Scholarship Procedures to be implemented for the Fall 2016 Season

Posted 4/27/2016

Exciting changes are coming to Girls on the Run of the Triangle! As you have witnessed, GOTR Triangle has grown significantly over the past few years. This year we are anticipating serving over 2,100 girls through the Spring and Fall seasons. Additionally, as a non-profit dedicated to serving the entire population of our region, we are committed to ensuring that no girl is turned away from our program due to financial need. Our growth, along with our desire to serve all girls, results in the need to make some changes to our Registration and Scholarship processes.

Girls on the Run of the Triangle is moving to a lottery registration process for the Fall 2016 season. While the first-come, first-served approach we have used for many years has worked sufficiently in the past, the lottery system allows every family an equal opportunity to register and equal access to participate in the program by increasing the length of registration time. This change will reduce conflicts for families who have limited online access due to their work schedule, computer access, or those who face technological problems while registering online. Lottery registration is used by the majority of GOTR councils nationwide and is recommended by Girls on the Run International.

Registration will open for three days and then temporarily close. At that time, if more girls are registered than the number of available spots on a team, the registration system will randomly select girls for that team. All additional girls will be placed on the wait list.  For teams that are not at full capacity, all girls who registered during the lottery will be added. Registration will then re-open for teams with open slots still available and girls who register during this window will be added on a first-come, first-served basis until capacity is reached for each team.

Online registration will now be available via mobile devices.  Additionally, our entire Registration page is accessible in both English and Spanish.

GOTR Triangle is committed to providing scholarships to girls in need. As the overall number of girls served has increased, the number of scholarships we provide has therefore also increased, resulting in a need for us to create a more equitable and formalized scholarship process.  While some aspects of the previous scholarship process will remain the same, we have implemented important changes for the Fall season.

What is changing:

  • Receiving a scholarship will involve a three step process:
  1. Families will complete an online Scholarship Application (available via computer or mobile device and accessible in both English and Spanish).
  2. Families will be asked to provide financial documentation verifying their need for financial assistance. See accompanying information sheet for examples of acceptable documentation. Schools can also provide confirmation of receipt of Free/Reduced lunch status.
  3. Once approved through the GOTR office, families will receive a scholarship code which they will redeem online when they complete the online Registration, thereby ensuring their daughter is registered at her school/community site for the season.

Please feel free to contact our Program Director, Sharon Shofer, at or our Program Coordinator, Hannah Robinson, at with any registration or scholarship related questions.

Be a Girls on the Run Coach Mentor!

Coaching a GOTR or Heart & Sole team is truly a rewarding and life changing experience...for YOU and the 15 girls on your team.

"I coach to be that voice for girls that I did not have."

Are you or your Girl on the Run looking for some great summer reading? Look no further! We believe this list portrays girls and women as active agents in their stories who lead value-driven, inspired lives. Each book listing includes an associated GOTR value and reading questions.

We are looking forward to hosting a book club finale on Saturday, August 15th where we can share our favorite books, and engage in fun games and activities… stay tuned for details!

And parents, we haven’t forgotten about you! We've also compiled a brief list of both fiction and non-fiction books that are centered on parenting young girls. “You can be happy and sad at the same time, you know. It just happens that way sometimes.” – Norton Juster, The Hello, Goodbye Window.

We are marking some big changes at GOTR Triangle. We are thrilled to welcome Mia Xavier as our new Development Manager and Carrie Gilmore as our new Community Outreach & SoleMates Coordinator, but we are super sad to say goodbye to Danielle Irwin, who has held both of these positions for the past 3 years. Danielle will be finishing her law degree and moving to West Virginia in 2015. We can't thank her enough for her warm smile and spot on professional work in executing amazing events, stewarding our donors, and coordinating our SoleMates and volunteers.

Both Mia and Carrie will carry the torch well and help GOTR Triangle build capacity to serve more girls and expand our programming and reach throughout the Triangle. Please join us in welcoming Mia and Carrie and wishing Danielle the very best!

Important Reindeer Romp 5k Information

Posted 11/29/2014

Count Down to the End of Season 5k:  The Reindeer Romp 5k is fast approaching!  All GOTR girls will celebrate the end of the season by participating in the Reindeer Romp 5k on Saturday, December 6th at 10am at the Wake Med Soccer park in Cary!

Make sure you are registered as a recreational runner for this event if you are running with your daughter!

All girls will need a running buddy! Please contact your daughter's coach if she will need a volunteer running buddy.  We will make sure someone will support her across the finish line!

A few important Race Day Reminders:

-Your daughter is already registered for the 5k.  You only need to register yourself (or a running buddy) if you are running with her.

-Parents who are running and/or Running Buddies will need to pick up their race day bib and tshirt at Packet Pick Up which will be held on:

  • Wednesday, December 3rd from 3-6pm at Fleet Feet in Durham off Fayetteville Road, near PF Changs
  • Thursday, December 4th from 3-6pm at Fleet Feet in Raleigh,Wade Avenue location
  • You can also pick up bibs and tshirts on race day at On-Site Registration at the Wake Med Soccer Park starting at 8:30am

-All of the girls race day needs (bibs, tshirts, etc.) will be located at our team gathering area near the start line.  They will NOT be at packet pick up.

-The GOTR Gathering area will be organized and color coded by county and by teams.  Please bring your daughter to the large field near the Starting Line by 9am on race day.  Your daughter's coach will tell you prior to race day which color balloons to look for.  There will be volunteers near the entrance to the field to help you find your way!

-There is usually a very long line of cars waiting to get into the Wake Med Soccer park prior to the start of the race.  Make sure you leave early enough to get to the venue by 9am!

-Come prepared to run and have fun regardless of the weather! Rain, snow, sun, cold...we will run.  Remember, there is no bad weather...only bad clothing!   There is no "rain date" or refund for this event.

-This is a community sponsored and community open event.  Girls on the Run of the Triangle is the beneficiary, not the organizers of this event.  All race related questions, regarding registration, payment, etc. should be directed to the Race Directors:  David Wood - and Karl Lyon -, for whom we are VERY grateful!

Join the Grown Up Version of Our GOTR Summer Book Club

Posted 7/7/2014

Girls on the Run READ, Update and Part Two...

A few weeks ago we launched our first ever GOTR Triangle Summer Book Club directed to our GOTR participants and recent alumnae.  It’s been fantastically embraced with 35 girls participating and already sharing their feedback on their progress and favorite books.  In addition, we promised something for our older GOTR fans (coaches, volunteers, parents and supporters), as well, so here are the details.

We are excited to partner with author, Heather W. Cobham, who has agreed to donate a portion of all proceeds from her book, Hungry Mother Creek, ordered during the months of July and August to Girls on the Run of the Triangle.

Hungry Mother Creek is a novel of love, loss and the healing power of speaking your truth.  It follows Maya Sommers as she rebuilds her life in Oriental, N.C. after losing everything, including her husband, in Hurricane Katrina.  As Maya and the other characters learn to heal from their past and create meaningful lives they find strength in some of the same principles Girls on the Run promotes.  Hungry Mother Creek emphasizes the importance of women supporting one another, learning to overcome negative self talk and the importance of caring for our physical bodies.  Maya and Bay, two of the main characters, are avid runners who use running to cope with stress, improve their self esteem and connect with each another.  Similar to the coaches in Girls on the Run, mentors show up in Maya’s life to share their life experiences and to teach her how to tap into her own inter wisdom, both of which contribute to Maya’s emotional growth and healing.

We encourage you all to pick up a copy via Amazon or at your local book store and join us in a virtual book club during the months of July and August.  We will post discussion questions on our Facebook and Twitter pages and would love to engage you in conversation.  Our adult summer book club will culminate on Thursday, August 14th with a 7pm book reading, signing and chance to talk with Heather.  If you decide to read the book and/or want to come to the August 14th reading, please contact .

We hope you all will join us there. Happy reading!

Announcing our First Ever Summer Book Club!

Posted 6/18/2014

Love to read?  Looking for something fun to do over the summer?  Want to stay connected to Girls on the Run??   Join our first ever Girls on the Run Summer Book Club

This casual reading program is a great way for us to stay in touch with GOTR girls who have recently completed our program  or - if you are new to GOTR - it’s a great introduction to what we are all about!  We have put together a diverse list of books for the girls to read, along with some fun and motivating rewards for reaching various milestones or completing certain activities! We also are looking forward to hosting two get-togethers over the summer where we can all meet, share our favorite books, and engage in fun games and activities.

Our book clubs contains twenty-one books that we believe portray girls and women as active agents in their stories and leading value-driven, inspired lives. Each book listing includes an associated GOTR value, two reading questions to prompt you to further explore the meaning of the book and its implications, and - lastly - an activity that hopefully will engage not just you but also your family, friends, and community. We hope that these books inspire the girls to read, and to also stay connected to the values and lessons they learned during their time as a Girl on the Run.

Download the book list and activities here and make sure you email to let us know you are participating.  We want to keep up with you as you read this summer!  Enjoy!

Another Parent Shares Why She Loves GOTR

Posted 3/18/2014

We love this  "I Love GOTR" Story that we received from a GOTR Efland-Cheeks mom last week. We just had to share!

"One reason I love GOTR is that it gives my daughter a chance to bond with other girls from her school that she might not otherwise meet had she not been in this group. She comes home telling us all of the great and fun things that they do to make running, jogging, and even walking fun. The other night she told our family that we were all going to go out on the track. She has never done that before! She also always brings home her papers from practice to show the family and then she posts it on the refrigerator as a reminder to herself and others.

We/She looks forward to GOTR each week. She gets her workout clothes, cold water, and a healthy snack ready the night before--she is so motivated!! I see the difference it makes in her life every day when I pick her up. We are so proud of her and her love for GOTR."

Tell us why do you love GOTR? "#WeloveGOTR

GOTR Puts Stereotypes on the Run!

Posted 3/3/2014

We are pleased to share this article, featured in Walter Magazine, which highlights our GOTR team at Underwood Elementary.  It is beautifully written and so clearly conveys our mission and program.

We particularly want to thank our coaches, Hope, Meg, & Darby for their articulate comments.  We are continually struck by the wisdom and commitment of our coaches.  Our girls are so very fortunate to have them as role models, mentors and women who care so deeply for them and their well-being.

GOTR Triangle Partners with Abilitations Children's Therapy and Wellness Center

Posted 9/23/2013

GOTR Triangle is thrilled to announce our partnership with Abilitations Children's Therapy and Wellness Center, as we begin our first season hosting a GOTR team specially designed for girls with special needs.  This team will be led by Abilitations co-owners and Physical Therapists, Jennifer Mock and T.R.Goins, and long time GOTR Coach, Leslie Quackenbush, LSW.

We love what T.R. had to say about our partnership:

"The young girls on this GOTR team have been presented with obstacles from early on, yet they push forward, persevere, and show great attitudes in doing so.  At Abilitations, we believe every child has the potential to become who they are meant to be despite the obstacles that lie in their way.  By becoming a GOTR site and starting and adapted running program, we feel we've found the perfect way to support these girls toward a joyful, healthy, and confident life."

The first GOTR Triangle Coach of the Year Award was announced at the Quintiles GOTR 5k on Saturday, April 13th.  We are excited and proud to announce our inaugural winner is Marian Barrett, GOTR coach at Scroggs Elementary in Chapel Hill.

Marian's nomination was submitted by Ellie S. a fourth grader at Scroggs. Ellie says "Marian is encouraging and teaches me important lessons that she will need for school and life."  Ellie also told us that one of the reasons Coach Marian is so  amazing is because when she was young she was a Girl on the Run!

Our runner up was Mironda Martin, GOTR Coach at Pearsontown Elementary School in Durham.  Mironda was nominated by Mackenzie G. a third grader at Pearsontown.  Mackenzie told us that Mironda is very comforting and encouraging.  She says the best thing  about Coach Mironda is that she always does her best and she is always the person she wants to be."

Congratulations to both Marian and Mironda.  We are grateful for all our coaches who inspire our girls to be joyful, healthy & confident!
